Indian Campfire Stories

Dave “Big Owl” McSurdy will stand on ‘twelve skunk skins’ to tell stories about Rainbow Crow, How a Cicada tricked a Coyote, a race between a rabbit and a turtle, and other stories told around an American Indian campfire.  Stories are for all ages from young to young at heart.  In case of rain, the program will be canceled.  Program sponsored by the Blue Mountain Wildlife Inc. in partnership with the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.

Taste of Hamburger Festival Dine & Dash Burgers & Trail Race

Mixing the spirit of an active outdoor lifestyle with that of ground beef indulgence may sound impossible, but Blue Mountain Wildlife is giving it a try. Work up an appetite for Taste of Hamburg-er Festival by running the Dine & Dash. Start by downing a burger. Then run a mile. Then down another burger. Then finish it off with another mile run. What could be better!

WHERE: Second and State Streets in Hamburg

COURSE: The beautiful and flat Richard Etchberger Trail along the scenic Schuylkill River. The race starts with the consumption of one hamburger, followed by a 1-mile run, the consumption of the second hamburger and a 1-mile run back to the finish line.

AMENITIES: Two hamburgers and a free T-shirt. Results posted on website. No refunds or mailed awards.

AWARDS: Fastest Male and Female overall; Fastest Males and Females in the following categories: Juniors (15 years old and younger), General (16 to 39 years old), and Masters (40+ years old); Best Costume, Best Dog and Judges' Choice!

2018 BMW Trail Race Series Run To The Rock 10K, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races

2018 BLUE MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE TRAIL RACE SERIES
“Run To The Rock”  10K, 5K OR 2.5K TRAIL RACES

WHAT: A 10K, 5K or 2.5K Trail Race.
The challenging 10K course starts on the Etchberger Trail at the Hamburg Community Park. It runs south to the old Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge, crosses the Schuylkill River and continues onto the Therman Madiera Switchback running north along the west bank of the Schuylkill. The course continues through the Desilting Basin on the Cabela's Wetlands Trail to the Monument Parking Lot, then turns north onto Kernsville Dam Road and continues to the Lowlands Trail. It continues on the Lowlands Trail along the Schuylkill River to the Kernsville Dam, where it continues north on Kernsville Dam Road to the Pulpit Rock Trail. It continues north along the Schuylkill River to "The Rock", where it doubles back to the Kernsville Dam Road, to the Therman Madiera Switchback and the Etchberger Trail, finishing at the Hamburg Community Park. Race length is 10 kilometers and change in elevation is about 50 feet.

Invasive Species Hunt and Hike

Join us for a late spring hike to identify common non-native invasive plants like garlic mustard, multiflora rose, various honeysuckles, oriental bittersweet and more.  We will also look at the ‘Tree-of-Heaven’ and its relationship to the spotted lanternfly.  We’ll meet in the Monument Parking Lot for a moderate hike and learn how you can help keep our forests and wetlands healthy and clean.  Wear a sturdy pair of shoes and bring a pair of work gloves so we can tackle some of the intruders we find.  In case of heavy rain, the hike will be canceled.  Program sponsored by the Blue Mountain Wildlife Inc. in partnership with the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.

2018 BMW Trail Race Series Mad Dash 5-Mile, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races

2018 BLUE MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE TRAIL RACE SERIES
“Mad Dash” 5-Mile, 5K OR 2.5K TRAIL RACES

WHAT: A 5-Mile, 5K or 2.5K Trail Race.
The challenging 5-mile course starts at Reservoir Road just above the gate at the Parking Lot and runs two miles to the Reservoir and up to the top of the ridge, one mile along the ridge to the west and the returns the two miles to the start. Rocky trails, steep slopes, clear creeks and beautiful views of northern Berks County abound. Race length is 5 miles and change in elevation is approximately 760 feet.
The 5K course starts at Reservoir Road just above the gate at the Parking Lot and runs two loops around the Reservoir before returning to the start. Race length is 5 kilometers and change in elevation is approximately 200 feet.
The 2.5K course starts at Reservoir Road just above the gate at the Parking Lot and runs one loop around the Reservoir before returning to the start. Race length is 2.5 kilometers and change in elevation is approximately 200 feet.
This event is the second of the series of three race events and will be followed later in the year by the "Run To The Rock" 10K, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Community Park on Saturday June 23, 2018. Turn RIGHT onto OLD US 22 and continue 3.1 miles west to RESERVOIR ROAD (near the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church). Turn RIGHT onto RESERVOIR ROAD and continue about 0.7 miles. Look for signs and volunteers.
From the north, south and west, travel to downtown Hamburg and take STATE STREET/OLD US 22 approximately 2.2 miles east toward Lenhartsville. Turn LEFT onto RESERVOIR ROAD (near the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church) and continue about 0.7 miles. Look for signs and volunteers.

WHO: Anyone can participate.

Bird Walk at the Kerny

Join Berks Parks and Recreation for an early morning walk along the Cabela’s Wetlands Trail looking for birds attracted to the wetlands and other wildlife abundant to the area.  The Kernsville Dam Recreation Area is one of the best locations in the County for birders, and this is a peak time for migrant songbirds.  Dress for the weather, and for a leisurely walk about 1-mile in length.  Bring binoculars, or borrow a pair from us.  Depending on the weather, we should see 35 or more species of birds!

WHAT: A 10K, 5K or 2K Trail Race.
The 10K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for five kilometers, then reverse and return to the finish line. Race length is 10,000 meters (10 Kilometers or about 6.21 miles) on a well-groomed trail and change in elevation is less than 75 feet.
The 5K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for 2.5 kilometers, then reverse and return to the finish line. Race length is 5,000 meters (5 Kilometers or about 3 miles) and change in elevation is approximately 50 feet.
The 2K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for one kilometer, then reverse and return to the finish line. Race length is 2,000 meters (2 Kilometers or about 1.2 miles) and change in elevation is negligible.
This event is the first of the series of three race events and will be followed later in the year by the "Mad Dash" 5-Mile, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Reservoir on Saturday May 19, 2018 and the "Run To The Rock" 10K, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Community Park on Saturday June 23, 2018.
